The Music Lesson - Public Art Mural - Photograph by Dora Sofia Caputo
"A group of children carrying musical instruments about to go into a building for a music lesson.
But none of it is really there - not the youngsters, not the instruments not the door they are about to enter. It is instead, a devilishly well-planned illusion, a 17x8 ft mural, painted in the French style of trompe l'oeil, a technique devised to trick the mind into believing that a painting on a flat surface is a real three-dimensional scene. The artist, American muralist William Cochran, tried to highlight what he saw as the multicultural identity of the village of Great Neck, New York, choosing Great Neck children from a variety of ethnicities, and its history in the arts.
Many artists and performers have lived in Great Neck, including Groucho Marx, W.C. Fields, Francis Ford Coppola, Alan King, F. Scott Fitzgerald". Excerpt from The NY Times - 2005.
